Mr. Micheal Tagoe, a Counselor and the Programs Fascilitator at Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG),Cape coast, has linked the increase in maternal mortality to unsafe abortion being practiced by most women especially young people.
“Unsafe abortion is increasing because many people are having unprotected sex leading to unwanted pregnancies and they find their own means of terminating the pregnancy either with unprescribed drugs or other unqualified means leading to death.”…….He said.
He further noted that, most people now are having sexual intercourse without any protection which exposes them to unwanted pregnancies and in an attempt to terminate the pregnancy with unprescribed drugs and other unqualified means, they end up experiencing complications such as infections or excessive bleeding which often leads to maternal death.
He went ahead to encourage people especially the youth to cultivate the habit of having protected sex and adopt any of the family planning methods to curb unwanted pregnancies and decrease the incidence of unsafe abortion.
He made this revelation during a 2 day workshop organized by PPAG for PEER EDUCATORS, comprising of health workers, media personnels, Tertiary students and community volunteers to champion the sensitization on Unsafe Abortion and other Sexual and Reproductive health challenges among young people in communities within the Cape Coast Metropolis.
Speaking to some of the participants, they expressed their readiness to apply the knowledge they have acquired as Peer Educators to help PPAG curb the incidence of Unsafe Abortion in the metropolis.
