Mr. Ebenezer Amoako Asamoah is a Focal Mental Health Officer for the KEEA Municipality.
In his interaction with the media, he revealed that, most mentally ill clients in the region are relapsing due to the client’s inability to purchase their medications as a result of financial Constraints.
He elaborated that, according to the Mental Health Act 2012, mental health care must be free for the mentally ill, but now, most of the Psychiatric medications are not even covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) thereby making it difficult for most of their clients confronted with financial challenges to purchase their medication to improve their mental health, hence the increased incidence of relapsed cases.
“Majority of our clients are relapsing because their drugs are not covered by NHIS and they are very expensive on the market for them to buy”….he said.
“We are therefore calling on the Government to supply us with adequate medications and also NGO’s to help us secure medications for our clients to improve mental health care delivery.”……..He pleaded.
Mr. Asamoah made this revelation during a 3day training organized for Community Mental Health Nurses by the Central Region Health Directorate in collaboration with Mental Health Authority on the theme, “Promoting Primary Mental Health Care”.
The Training was successfully held on 2nd-4th May, 2018 at Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, Conference hall.
